Located in heart of the the Peel Campus is the University of Salford’s internationally renowned Acoustics Department, which boasts an array of incredible rooms and facilities for acoustic measurement, modelling and development.
Acoustic testing has been carried out in Salford since 1957 when it was based on Meadow Rd in the loop of the River Irwell and visible from The Crescent A6. The Acoustics Laboratories of the University of Salford are now the designated National Institute for Airborne Acoustic Metrology (NIAAM) forming the pinnacle of acoustic calibration in the UK. Alongside those calibration services, the Acoustic Laboratories undertake commercial acoustic testing for all manner of organisations: from construction companies to loudspeakers manufacturers and for hearing defenders and dogs. The Acoustic Laboratories are backed up by the academics of Acoustics Research Centre ensuring that the laboratory is at the cutting edge of measurement techniques. Current areas of research include: Aural Diversity – looking at the differences in how people hear and are affected by sound; and the potential for noise annoyance from heat pumps.
