SFTOC 2024. Where do we begin? After a rainy 2023, we were blessed with one of our sunniest Sounds yet, and what better place to enjoy it than being surrounded by good people and gorgeous artists, all from this year’s new hub of the University of Salford’s beautiful Peel Campus.
New venues The Green, Maxwell and Peel Halls, Salford Museum & Art Gallery, Working Class Movement Library and The Old Fire Station stood boldly against our oldest and most beloved institutions, playing host to a whirlwind of musical styles — from the blissful Cornish folk of Daisy Rickman to the genre-blending exuberance of Ife Ogunjobi.
Meanwhile, crowd favourite The Old Pint Pot was raucous as ever, with Gurnal Gadafi’s closing set packed to the rafters with punkish spirit (and sweat). SEEN’s DJ showcase at Bexley Square, had there been a roof, would have blown it clean off; rivalled only by the venues flanking it. The belly of St Philips Church once again provided a haven of cool calm against the heat of the day, with the long-awaited appearance of French Baroque Pop artist Halo Maud. And Islington Mill, our beloved home, came alive once again with courtyard DJs from Sarah Bates & Friends, and electric, experimental energy spilling out of Partisan Club and Mirage Bar.
And then we reached the afterparties. Not one, not two, but three — including our very own SFTOC takeover of Maxwell Hall. DJs, dancers, Drums of Utopia… not to mention immersive projections dancing on the walls. What a way to breathe life back into the space, giving us a brief but perfect reminder of the venue’s legendary past.
Well, that’s enough starry-eyed nostalgia from us. We hope you had as much fun as we did (a lot).
