Our 2026 Art Director… SAM SELLEY

Every year, we commission a visual artist to take on the role of Art Director — dreaming up a fun theme or idea for the festival, and creating unexpected moments across our venues for you to experience on the day. You may have seen this year that we did an open call to find our 2026 Art Director, and we’re now so excited to announce that it’s Sam Selley!

What’s the theme?

The year is 1374. The townsfolk of Salford arise in a trance-like state, and begin a frenzied dance. On top of that, the aliens have decided to invade.

Expect a psychedelic extravaganza of medieval tapestries, intergalactic beings, dancers, spacecrafts… and forsooth! Was that a cat?!

Who is Sam?

Sam Selley is a giant head maker, animator, printmaker, fabric assembler, paper cutter-outer and workshop facilitator.

Their work often explores folklore, the obscure, identity and the natural environment, as well as bringing multiple objects and beings together that wouldn’t usually be seen in the same space. They are frequently experimenting with new materials and techniques, whilst finding ways to repurpose unwanted items and incorporating natural materials.

Their practice is rooted in being socially engaged and aims to involve communities wherever possible whilst increasingly responding to the ever changing state of the world and exploring ways we can find commonality, and use art as resistance.

What next?

Keep an eye on our socials, our website, and maybe sign up to our mailing list if you haven’t already, as this year’s story unfolds and for any opportunities to get involved 👽
